KraftMaid Home Additions & ADU: The San Diego Owner’s Guide

If you’re planning a home addition or ADU and want KraftMaid cabinetry specified throughout, we install KraftMaid in every project we build across San Diego. A full home addition with KraftMaid cabinetry typically runs $53,100 to $153,400 in San Diego, while a detached ADU with KraftMaid kitchen and bath cabinets lands between $106,200 and $259,600. Most homeowners call us when they’ve already bought or priced KraftMaid boxes and realized their existing contractor doesn’t actually know how to install them correctly, or when they want one company to handle the framing, finishes, and cabinet installation without finger-pointing between trades. The pain point is rarely the cabinet itself. It’s an addition or ADU where the KraftMaid order was measured wrong, delivered with missing fillers, or installed on walls that were never straightened first.

Which KraftMaid Models This Applies To

We work with the full KraftMaid catalog: Vantage, Venicia, and the standard framed line. Vantage is the one that trips up most contractors in San Diego. It’s KraftMaid’s frameless, full-overlay line, and it demands a flatter wall than any framed cabinet. If the drywall behind it isn’t shimmed properly, the doors bind at the corners and the drawer fronts never line up. Venicia, also frameless, has a different clip system for hinges and uses metric hardware in spots most installers assume is standard. The framed line is more forgiving, but the fillers and moldings still need to be ordered in the right widths for San Diego’s older homes, where walls are rarely square. The best way to identify your exact parts: pull a drawer box and look for the white label on the inside of the cabinet frame. It carries the product line, finish code, and door style. Without that, matching a replacement door or drawer front becomes guesswork, and KraftMaid finishes do shift slightly between production runs. When we’re adding onto an existing KraftMaid kitchen rather than starting fresh, we order doors and trim through a current KraftMaid dealer so the finish lands as close as possible to what’s already in the home. Aftermarket doors are rarely worth it on KraftMaid. The finish codes don’t match, the door profiles are subtly off, and in San Diego’s coastal light the color difference shows within a year.

Signs Your KraftMaid Home Addition & ADU Is Failing

  • Doors and drawer fronts were installed out of alignment and keep drifting. On frameless KraftMaid lines this almost always means the wall wasn’t shimmed flat before the cabinets went up. The hinges can only adjust a few millimeters. After that, the cabinet box itself is twisted.
  • Crown molding has gaps at the ceiling or corners that never close up. San Diego ceilings move with seasonal humidity shifts, especially in coastal neighborhoods like Point Loma and Ocean Beach. KraftMaid’s moldings are rigid. If the installer didn’t scribe them to the actual ceiling contour, you’ll see daylight at the edges within months.
  • Soft-close hinges and drawer slides were swapped for cheap aftermarket hardware. We’ve walked into additions where the general contractor substituted generic slides to save money after the cabinet budget ran over. KraftMaid’s spec hardware is built for daily use. Aftermarket slides sag under heavy pots and pans.
  • Filler strips are the wrong width, so end cabinets float off the wall or sit proud of the door casing. This is a measuring failure, and it’s the most common KraftMaid installation error we correct in San Diego additions and ADUs. Fillers must be ordered to match the actual wall dimensions plus scribe allowance, not the architectural plan dimensions.
  • Drawer boxes rub against adjacent cabinets or the face frame after a year of settling. Additions and ADUs in San Diego sit on foundations that move with our clay soils and dry-wet cycles. If the cabinets weren’t installed with proper weight distribution and shimming, settling pushes them out of square and the reveals go uneven.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A full home addition with KraftMaid cabinetry in San Diego runs $53,100 to $153,400. A detached ADU with KraftMaid in the kitchen and bath sits between $106,200 and $259,600. The spread mostly reflects square footage, ceiling height, site access, and how much foundation and utility work the property requires. What drives the cabinet portion specifically: the KraftMaid line you choose, door style, finish, and whether you’re adding pull-outs, glass fronts, or specialty storage. We put every price in writing before any work starts. That written price is not an estimate we revise when the job gets harder. It’s the number on the contract, and it covers the framing, finish work, KraftMaid installation, hardware, and our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the work isn’t right within a year of completion, we make it right at no cost to you.

DIY or Call Us?

There are things you can check before anyone shows up: look for the KraftMaid label inside a drawer box to confirm your line and finish code, note which doors or drawers are misbehaving, and take photos of any gaps or misalignments in daylight. That saves us a diagnostic trip. What you should not do is try to re-shim, re-hang, or re-level installed cabinets. Once cabinets are loaded with dishes, stone, and a countertop, the weight involved is serious. A cabinet that comes off the wall or shifts mid-adjustment can cause injury and will definitely damage the countertop and whatever is underneath. KraftMaid frameless lines are less forgiving than framed lines, and the hinge adjustment points are specific. Getting it wrong strips the hardware and leaves you with a door that won’t close until a new hinge arrives. Isaac Pruett’s approach to this is simple: “Tell me what’s broken. I’ll tell you what it takes.” Call (619) 673-9302 and we’ll walk you through what you’re seeing and whether it needs a service call or a full correction.
