Wellborn Kitchen Remodeling: The San Diego Owner’s Guide
Most Wellborn kitchen remodeling projects in San Diego run between $16,520 and $53,100, depending on cabinet line, layout, and what’s behind the walls once we open them up. If you’re holding a Wellborn cabinet door that won’t stay shut, a drawer box that’s pulling apart at the corner, or hinge hardware that’s stripped out, we can usually match the part and have the repair done in a single visit. The parts your Wellborn kitchen may need are either manufactured by Wellborn or spec-matched aftermarket replacements that fit the same dimensions and mounting points, and we keep the most common failure items on the truck.
Here’s what we usually see: a homeowner opens a cabinet one morning and the door dips or sags. A drawer that used to glide now grinds. A soft-close hinge that slams instead. A corner on a mitered cabinet door has separated just enough to catch the light. None of these mean you need a full kitchen replacement. Most of the time, it’s a hinge, a glideset, a drawer box, or a trim piece, and it’s fixable for a fraction of what people assume they’ll spend.
Which Wellborn Models This Applies To

Wellborn builds cabinetry across a few core lines: the Estate series, Premier series, and Cabinetworks series (formerly Wellborn Cabinet Essentials). Within each, door styles and finishes vary, but the mechanical hardware (hinges, drawer glides, roll-outs, shelf pins, corner braces) is shared across a lot of the catalog. The compatibility gotcha is usually in the hinge overlay. Older Wellborn cabinets, particularly those installed before roughly 2010, commonly used a ½-inch overlay hinge with a face-frame mounting pattern. Newer Wellborn lines use a 1¼-inch overlay concealed hinge with a different screw spread. If you swap in the wrong overlay, the door will sit proud of the frame or overlap it unevenly, and no adjustment fixes it. You have to match the overlay before you tighten a screw.
We identify the right part two ways: first, the Wellborn sticker inside the cabinet box, usually on the upper left interior wall of a base cabinet or the back panel of a wall cabinet. It carries a cabinet code and finish code, not just a series name. Second, we measure the hinge screw spread and door thickness. Wellborn doors typically run ¾-inch thick on full-overlay lines and ⅝-inch on some older face-frame styles. If you tell us the code off the sticker, we can usually tell you over the phone what will fit. If the sticker’s gone, we take the measurements in person and match from there.
For hardware specifically, OEM Wellborn hinges and glides are fine, but we sometimes recommend a quality aftermarket equivalent (Blum or Salice, depending on the series) because Wellborn sources hardware from major motion-hardware suppliers anyway, and the aftermarket version is often the exact same component without the cabinet-brand markup. For anything structural (door fronts, drawer faces, panels), OEM is the right call. The finish needs to match, and Wellborn’s finish codes are not something an aftermarket shop can reliably duplicate.
Mason Remodeling Co San Diego is an independent service provider, not affiliated with Wellborn. We install and match Wellborn components, but any warranty behind the cabinet itself remains between you and the manufacturer.

Signs Your Wellborn Kitchen Remodeling Is Failing
- Door sag at the hinge corner. The hinge’s vertical adjustment screw has drifted, or the hinge cup has pulled loose from the door’s bored hole. Most sagging Wellborn doors need either an adjustment or a cup repair plate, not a new door.
- Drawer glides grinding or sticking. This typically means a worn ball-bearing slide or a plastic roller that’s cracked. In San Diego’s dry, warm kitchens, older plastic components get brittle faster than in more humid climates.
- Soft-close hinge slamming shut. The damper inside the hinge cup has blown out. You can’t service the damper; the hinge gets replaced. It’s a 10-minute swap per door.
- Mitered door corner separation. The joint was clamped and joined at the factory, but years of heat and low humidity in parts of San Diego (especially east toward El Cajon and Santee) pull moisture from the wood, and corner joints show it first. Depending on the severity, the door can be re-clamped and re-glued, or it gets replaced.
- Finish wear at the sink base or the pull hardware. Wellborn finishes hold up reasonably well, but the cabinet under the sink takes constant moisture exposure. Darker finishes in particular will show speckling or lightening around the sink deck after years of use. That’s often a reface decision rather than a full replacement.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

When we talk “Wellborn kitchen remodeling” in San Diego, the range is honest and broad: $16,520 to $53,100 for a full kitchen remodel that includes cabinet replacement or refacing, countertops, sink and faucet work, and often lighting. The number moves because of cabinet line, square footage, electrical, and how much has to be re-plumbed. A small kitchen in a condo near Mission Valley or a mid-century ranch house in Clairemont is going to sit at the low end of that range. A larger kitchen with an island in La Jolla or Del Mar is moving toward the top.
For individual parts and repairs, which is what most Wellborn owners actually need, the cost is far lower. Hinge replacement (both adjustment labor and hardware) typically runs $45 to $120 per hinge depending on access. A drawer glide set is $60 to $180 installed. A new drawer box runs $295 to $590 depending on size and material. A cabinet door reface on a Wellborn cabinet runs $350 to $800 per door. We’ll give you a written line-item price before any work starts, so you see parts, labor, and tax separated. No surprises, no change orders out of nowhere.
Every installation we perform is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the work isn’t right within a year of completion, we make it right at no cost to you. That’s stated in writing on your paperwork, with coverage terms spelled out, including what’s excluded and for how long.
DIY or Call Us?
Most Wellborn hardware is not dangerous to work on, and if you can turn a Phillips screwdriver and a hex key, you can likely adjust a door hinge or replace a shelf pin yourself. The moment it gets structural (drawer box reconstruction, door joint repair, anything requiring clamping or gluing), bring in someone who does it daily. A poorly clamped door joint meant to hold for twenty years will fail in eighteen months, and you’ll pay twice.
The one exception: cabinet doors stacked against a wall have tipped and hurt people, and a full upper-cabinet replacement is a two-person job. If you’re removing and lifting upper cabinets, it’s not worth the risk or the drywall damage. Call (619) 673-9302 and we’ll walk it through with you.
FAQs

With reasonable care, Wellborn cabinets in San Diego typically last 20 to 30 years, with hinges and drawer glides being the first components to wear out somewhere between year 8 and year 15. Our dry climate is easier on the wood than a humid one, which helps the boxes hold up, but it’s harder on finish and plastic components. Call (619) 673-9302 if you’re at the point where multiple hardware items are failing, and we’ll give you an honest read on repair versus replace.
Yes, in most cases a failing Wellborn door or drawer can be repaired rather than replaced. Hinges and glides get swapped, drawer boxes get rebuilt, and door joints get re-clamped and re-glued. Replacement is usually reserved for finish-matching problems or damage that’s gone through the wood. Call (619) 673-9302 for an exact assessment; estimates are free.
Most individual hinge, glide, or shelf-pin replacements take under an hour once we’re on site. A full kitchen hardware upgrade (every hinge and glide) is usually a single full day for an average San Diego kitchen. A larger remodeling scope moves on a different calendar. Call (619) 673-9302 with your cabinet codes and we’ll give you a timeline.
We keep the most common Wellborn hinges, glides, shelf pins, and corner braces on the truck, including both overlay patterns so we’re not chasing a part after we’ve already opened your cabinet. For door faces, drawer boxes, and anything finish-matched, we place a specific order and it arrives at a known date. Call (619) 673-9302 and we’ll tell you what we have in hand before we schedule the visit.
