PGT Kitchen Remodeling: The San Diego Owner’s Guide
If you have a PGT kitchen window or door that’s part of a larger remodeling job, you’re likely dealing with something specific: a failed seal, a warped frame, or a sash that no longer locks square. Mason Remodeling Co San Diego stocks and installs PGT-compatible kitchen window and door components throughout San Diego County, with full kitchen remodels running $16,520 to $53,100 depending on scope. Most PGT kitchen openings can be measured, priced, and scheduled within one visit, and we carry the common replacement hardware on our trucks so you’re not waiting two weeks for a part that should have been ordered yesterday. The way owners usually find the problem: a window over the sink won’t close flush, a garden door drags against the track, or condensation fog appears between the glass panes where it never used to be.
PGT makes impact-rated windows and doors built for coastal weather, but salt air in San Diego neighborhoods like Point Loma, Ocean Beach, and La Jolla accelerates wear on rollers, weatherstripping, and frame seals faster than inland areas. That’s the difference between a part that lasts 15 years and one that needs attention at year 9.
Which PGT Models This Applies To

PGT’s kitchen-relevant lines break into two families: the WinGuard series (impact-rated, commonly specified in coastal San Diego) and the SpectraGuard/Eze-Breeze line (lighter, often used in enclosed porches and patio kitchens). Within WinGuard, model numbers start with a W, and the aluminum frame will carry a sticker on the inside track showing the glass type, DP rating, and manufacturing date. Write down the full string, because PGT changed hardware suppliers a few times between 2005 and 2015, and a roller assembly from one year won’t always seat in a track from another.
For OEM versus aftermarket: PGT’s factory rollers, sash locks, and weatherstripping are quality parts, but they’re priced accordingly and can take 2 to 4 weeks if a distributor doesn’t have them on the shelf. For most San Diego kitchens, a quality aftermarket equivalent from a supplier like Prime-Line or CRL performs as well at 40 to 60 percent of the cost. The gotcha is compatibility. PGT frames use a narrower track channel on some 2008 to 2013 production runs. If you order a universal roller and the wheel profile is 2mm too wide, it’ll bind on the first slide. We measure the channel before ordering any aftermarket part, every time.
Mason Remodeling Co San Diego is an independent service provider, not affiliated with PGT. We stock aftermarket parts we’ve tested in the field alongside OEM components where the match matters.

Signs Your PGT Kitchen Remodeling Component Is Failing
- The window or door drags or sticks when you open it. Roller housing is worn or the track is packed with salt-and-sand grit. In San Diego, coastal salt sprays accelerate roller wear faster than thermal cycling alone. A window that sticks today is a window that drops off its track next week.
- You can feel air movement around the frame on a calm day. Weatherstripping has compressed or cracked. PGT’s factory weatherstripping loses its memory after 8 to 12 years, and once it’s flat, your kitchen air conditioning dollars are literally leaking past the sash.
- Condensation fogs the glass from the inside. The insulated glass unit’s seal has failed. This is not cosmetic. A failed seal means the argon or krypton gas fill has escaped, and the window’s R-value has dropped to that of a single pane.
- The lock no longer engages or the sash won’t seat square. Frame settlement, hinge wear, or a bent keeper. This is also a security issue for a ground-floor kitchen window: a lock that doesn’t fully throw is a lock that’s advertising itself.
- Visible rust on hinges, rollers, or the lock mechanism. Salt air and marine layer moisture accelerate corrosion on raw aluminum and plated steel. Once rust starts on a roller, it grinds itself into the track and gouges it beyond repair.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s what San Diego homeowners should expect to pay, installed, for PGT-compatible kitchen work:
- Kitchen Remodel (full, including PGT window/door replacement where applicable): $16,520 – $53,100
- Small Kitchen Remodel: $10,620 – $23,600
- Cabinet Installation: $4,720 – $15,340
- Countertop Installation: $2,360 – $7,670
- Backsplash Installation: $945 – $2,950
- Kitchen Island Installation: $3,540 – $11,800
What drives the spread: linear feet of cabinetry, countertop material (Cambria and Silestone run at the higher end, laminate at the lower), how much framing needs to be corrected, and whether your PGT openings need full frame replacement versus hardware-only repair. Every estimate we write in San Diego includes the part, the labor, and any disposal fees as line items. You get a written price before any work starts. No verbal estimate that grows on the final bill. That’s the rule, not a favor.
Our workmanship warranty covers the installation for 365 days from the completion date. If something isn’t right, we make it right at no cost to you. That’s the 365-Day Done Right Promise, applied to every kitchen remodel we complete.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check a few things yourself. Clean the track with a dry brush and a vacuum. Look for the model sticker and photograph it. Test the lock and note whether it throws fully or hangs up halfway. These observations save us a diagnostic visit and help you get an accurate price over the phone.
What you shouldn’t do is pull the sash out of a WinGuard frame. These are heavy. A full-lite impact sash can weigh 70 pounds or more, and the glass is rated to resist a 2×4 fired at 34 mph. If it drops out of the frame while you’re wrestling with it, we’re not replacing a roller anymore. We’re replacing a $1,200 insulated glass unit and possibly a countertop under it. The same goes for tension rollers. The spring shims are under compression, and they’ll take a finger off before you know it. If your PGT kitchen window or door is beyond a track cleaning, call us at (619) 673-9302. Tell me what’s broken. I’ll tell you what it takes.
FAQs

Expect 12 to 18 years from a PGT WinGuard window or sliding door in San Diego, with coastal areas like Mission Beach and Coronado on the lower end due to salt exposure. Frame seals fail first, followed by rollers and weatherstripping. Hardware is replaceable; once the aluminum frame itself is pitted, full replacement costs $9,440 to $29,500 depending on openings and impact ratings.
Yes, if the frame is square and the track isn’t gouged. A roller, weatherstripping, or lock replacement typically runs $470 to $2,125 per opening. If the insulated glass unit has a failed seal, expect $400 to $900 per sash for the IGU replacement. Call (619) 673-9302 and we’ll tell you over the phone which way it goes based on the symptoms and the model number.
Most single-window hardware replacements take 45 to 90 minutes on site once the part is in hand. A full kitchen remodel with PGT openings runs 2 to 6 weeks depending on scope and material lead times. You’ll get a written schedule with your written price, and you can call us to check progress on a live line, 24 hours a day.
We stock the common PGT-compatible rollers, locks, and weatherstripping on our trucks. For less common components like full sashes or custom-sized insulated glass units, we order from local San Diego suppliers and typically see the part in 3 to 7 business days. We also stock parts for KraftMaid cabinetry, Cambria and Silestone surfaces, so we can handle the entire kitchen without juggling six subcontractors.
