Techo-Bloc Driveway & Pavers: The San Diego Owner’s Guide

If you’re looking for Techo-Bloc driveway and pavers in San Diego, we stock the full range of Techo-Bloc-compatible products and install them for $8,260 to $21,240 for a complete driveway, with paver patio work running $4,130 to $12,980. Most San Diego homeowners discover they need us halfway through a DIY repair, when a single cracked paver turns into a base problem they didn’t see coming. A Techo-Bloc driveway that’s spongy underfoot, has pavers sliding out of line, or won’t drain after rain is telling you the installation underneath has failed, not just the surface.

Which Techo-Bloc Models This Applies To

Techo-Bloc makes several product lines, and they’re not interchangeable. The three you’ll most likely have in a San Diego driveway are Blu 60 (the smooth, modern slab paver), Industria (the flagstone-look paver with a textured surface), and Raffinato (the classic rectangular paver with a slightly tumbled edge). Each line has its own joint spacing requirement and base spec. A Blu 60 paver is 60mm thick and demands a tighter sand joint than an Industria paver, which moves more during expansion. If you replace a cracked Blu 60 with a Raffinato paver because it’s what the local stone yard had in stock, you’ll see a height mismatch within the first year. Grab a tape measure before you call anyone: Techo-Bloc pavers are metric, and a 60mm paver is not the same as a 2-3/8″ paver. That quarter-inch difference throws off an entire row. As an independent installer, we’re not affiliated with Techo-Bloc, which means we can be straight with you about whether a genuine OEM paver or a quality aftermarket equivalent makes more sense for your repair. In San Diego’s coastal air, an OEM Techo-Bloc paver with the original color blend will fade less noticeably than a generic match, because Techo-Bloc uses proprietary pigment blends that resist UV washout better than most aftermarket options.

Signs Your Techo-Bloc Driveway & Pavers Is Failing

  • Pavers rocking or tipping when you step on an edge. The sand bed underneath has washed out or compacted unevenly, usually from a drainage issue. In San Diego neighborhoods with clay-heavy soil like parts of Clairemont and Mission Valley, seasonal expansion pushes pavers out of plane fast.
  • Weeds or grass erupting through joints in a straight line. That means the polymeric sand between pavers has cracked and let moisture in. If you see this near the garage apron, water is getting under the paver base every time it rains.
  • Standing water or white efflorescence trails across the surface. Water is not moving through the base. In San Diego, a driveway with a 1% slope that’s settled to flat will pool, and the white mineral staining is salt wicking up through the paver.
  • Paver joints widening along one edge or near the curb. The edge restraint under the driveway has failed. Once the outside pavers spread, every row behind them follows, and you’ll see waves in the surface within months.
  • Color fading on only one side of the driveway. San Diego’s southern and western exposures get UV hammered for years. If your Techo-Bloc pavers on the south side look washed out while the shaded side still holds color, you’re seeing sealer failure, not paver failure, and that’s a cheaper fix.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A full Techo-Bloc driveway replacement in San Diego runs $8,260 to $21,240, depending on square footage, paver line, and whether we’re pulling up the old base or you’ve got a solid concrete slab we can overlay. A paver patio install runs $4,130 to $12,980. The range is wide because a 400-square-foot driveway with good base drainage is a completely different job than a 900-square-foot driveway on a slope with old asphalt underneath. Every quote we write includes the paver material, new bedding sand, edge restraint, compactor passes, and haul-away of the old surface. You’ll get a written price before we start, which means if base repair costs more than our first look suggested, you approve it in writing first, or we don’t do the work. Our work is covered by the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if anything about your Techo-Bloc installation isn’t right within a year of completion, we fix it at no cost. And if a repair we did fails, the second visit is free.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely replace a single cracked paver if the other pavers around it are still flat and the joints are tight. Lift it with two flathead screwdrivers, check that the sand underneath hasn’t washed out, and drop the new one in. What you should not do yourself is pull up a section of pavers to fix drainage, because once you open the edge restraint, the pavers behind it start migrating, and you’ll be chasing a wave across your driveway by sunset. Isaac Pruett grew up in Los Angeles, worked his way through Los Angeles Trade-Technical College, and has spent enough years on San Diego job sites to know that a driveway repair is never just the paver you can see. “Tell me what’s broken. I’ll tell you what it takes.” Call (619) 673-9302 if you’ve got a failing section, and we’ll give you an honest read on whether you need a paver swap or a base rebuild.
