Oldcastle Driveway & Pavers: The San Diego Owner’s Guide
We stock and install Oldcastle-compatible paver systems across San Diego, with paver driveway installation typically running $8,260 to $21,240 and paver patio work from $4,130 to $12,980 depending on square footage, base prep, and paver style. Most San Diego homeowners discover a failing paver area the same way: a low spot collects water after winter rains, a paver shifts underfoot, or edge restraints start letting sand wash out. We carry Oldcastle pavers, matching edge restraints, joint sand, and base material on our trucks for most repair visits.
If you’re dealing with a cracked paver, a sunken section, or failing edging on an Oldcastle installation, you’re in the right place. We’ll match your paver color and style, explain whether repair or replacement makes sense, and give you a written price before any work starts.
Which Oldcastle Models This Applies To

Oldcastle, now part of the APG family of brands, produces several paver lines that appear throughout San Diego driveways, walkways, and patios. The most common we see are the Holland Stone, Bristol, and Mega-Arbel series, along with permeable paver options used in newer builds where stormwater management matters. Each line has different dimensional tolerances, so matching an existing paver isn’t a guessing game. We measure the paver thickness, length, and width, then compare against current Oldcastle production specs before ordering.
One compatibility gotcha San Diego owners should know: pavers from the same Oldcastle line but different manufacturing years can vary slightly in color due to pigment batch differences in the concrete mix. We account for this by ordering from the same regional plant when possible and blending new pavers with existing ones during installation so the patch doesn’t read as an obvious rectangle. For OEM versus aftermarket, we recommend OEM Oldcastle pavers for visible areas like driveway aprons and front walkways. Quality aftermarket equivalents work fine for utility areas, but color match and chamfer profile rarely line up perfectly.
Mason Remodeling Co San Diego is an independent service provider and not affiliated with Oldcastle or APG. We do, however, install and repair their products every week and know their paver lines well enough to match what’s already in your yard.

Signs Your Oldcastle Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
- Sunken or depressed pavers in traffic areas. This almost always traces back to base material that wasn’t compacted properly or has eroded underneath. In San Diego’s clay-heavy soils, winter moisture gets under the base and creates voids that show up as dips by spring. The fix means pulling pavers, re-compacting the base, and re-laying the section.
- Pavers shifting or separating at the edges. Edge restraint failure is the most common issue we see in San Diego. Without a solid edge holding the field together, pavers drift outward and gaps open up. The repair is straightforward: reset the restraint with proper spikes and pull the field back into place.
- Sand washing out between joints after rain. Polymeric sand breaks down over time, especially on San Diego slopes and any surface that takes direct afternoon sun. When joints go empty, pavers start working against each other and chipping. Re-sanding with fresh polymeric sand usually solves it before structural damage sets in.
- Cracked or chipped pavers in one concentrated area. Isolated cracking often means a point load from a vehicle or a tree root pressing up from below. If it’s roots, we’ll tell you straight: the repair will need root pruning or the problem returns within a couple of seasons.
- Water pooling in the center of the driveway or patio. A properly installed paver surface should shed water evenly. Pooling says the original grade has settled or was never pitched correctly. We re-set the grade on the affected section so water moves away from the house, not toward your foundation.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

Paver driveway installation in San Diego runs $8,260 to $21,240 for a full installation. Repair work is smaller in scope: a typical sunken-section repair with new base and re-laid pavers runs $500 to $2,500, and edge restraint replacement usually lands between $400 and $1,800 depending on linear feet and access. Paver patio installation runs $4,130 to $12,980. What moves the price is square footage, current base condition, paver thickness, and whether we’re doing a patch repair or pulling and re-laying an entire section.
Every price we give is written before work starts. That written price includes parts, labor, base material, joint sand, and cleanup. It covers what we agreed to, nothing less and nothing added on at the end. The work carries a 365-Day Done Right Promise: if something we installed fails within a year, we fix it at no cost to the homeowner. We also provide a free second visit if a repair doesn’t hold, with no dispute process and no conditions.
DIY or Call Us?
Pavers are one of the safer hardscape projects to work around, but that doesn’t mean a homeowner should tackle everything alone. Checking whether sand has washed out between joints is safe and useful: sweep a broom across the surface and see where the sand sits low. Pulling a single lifted paver to look at the base is also reasonable if you’re careful and the paver isn’t load-bearing at that moment.
Where DIY goes wrong is the base. Re-compacting a base under an existing driveway takes a plate compactor, proper aggregate, and the judgment to know when the subgrade is too wet to work. In San Diego’s marine layer mornings, wet clay subgrade will fool you into thinking it’s compacted when it’s just pressed down temporarily. FAQs

Oldcastle concrete pavers typically last 25 to 40 years in San Diego’s climate, with the base underneath usually failing before the pavers themselves do. UV exposure fades color over time, but structural failure is almost always a base or edge restraint issue, not the paver wearing out. Call (619) 673-9302 if you want us to look at your installation and tell you honestly what’s worth fixing.
A single cracked paver can be replaced, and that’s usually the right call if the crack came from an impact or point load. If cracking spreads across multiple pavers or keeps recurring in the same spot, the base underneath is the problem and needs repair first. We’ll tell you which situation you have before recommending any work.
Most paver section repairs in San Diego take one day from removal to final sanding, assuming the weather is dry and we’re not fighting rain-soaked base material. Larger re-grades or full driveway replacements typically run three to five days. We’ll give you a clear timeline in your written estimate.
We keep common Oldcastle Holland Stone and Bristol pavers plus matching edge restraints and polymeric sand on our trucks, which covers most San Diego repair visits. Specialty lines like Mega-Arbel or permeable pavers are ordered per job and usually arrive within a week. Call (619) 673-9302 and we’ll check stock for your exact paver before you schedule.
