Cover Driveway & Pavers: The San Diego Owner's Guide

Cover-compatible driveway and paver replacement in San Diego typically runs $8,260 – $21,240 installed, and we stock the common failure points on our trucks so most swaps happen in a single visit. You'll usually know something's wrong when a paver sinks, shifts, or cracks along a seam, or when a section of driveway settles enough to pool water after rain. The most common discovery point is a paver that rocks underfoot or a visible dip that wasn't there last summer.

Mason Remodeling Co San Diego is an independent service provider. We are not affiliated with Cover, but we work on their systems regularly across San Diego County and know exactly which pavers, edge restraints, and base materials match which generation of their work.

Which Cover Models This Applies To

Cover systems in San Diego tend to fall into two categories: pedestal-mounted pavers over a structural subfloor, and traditional sand-set pavers over compacted aggregate. The parts fail differently. Pedestal systems usually fail at the pedestal or edge channel first. Sand-set systems fail at the base layer, and you won't see the problem until the paver above it moves.

Here's the compatibility gotcha most people miss: Cover's earlier pedestal systems used a 16-inch paver module, while newer installs in San Diego often run 24-inch or mixed-format pavers. The two don't interchange cleanly. If your driveway predates roughly 2018, measure the paver before you order anything. A 16-inch paver won't sit right on a 24-inch pedestal grid, and forcing it will crack the paver within a season.

For OEM versus aftermarket: Cover-branded pavers are fine, but we regularly install Belgard and Techo-Bloc equivalents at a better price point with equal or better color retention in San Diego sun. The key is matching thickness, not just face dimensions. A paver that's 2mm thinner than the surrounding field will telegraph through as a visible lip within months. We carry calipers on every truck for exactly this reason.

Signs Your Cover Driveway & Pavers Is Failing

  • Rocking or wobbling pavers. A paver that tilts when you step on it means the pedestal or sand bed beneath has shifted. In San Diego, this often follows a winter where we got more rain than the base layer was graded for.
  • Water pooling in one spot. Driveways are graded to shed water toward drains or the street. If a puddle forms and stays for more than an hour after rain, the base has settled and the slope is gone. Fixing the paver without fixing the grade just moves the puddle.
  • Cracks running in a line across multiple pavers. A crack that jumps from paver to paver in a straight line usually means the subfloor or concrete slab beneath is moving. In San Diego's expansive clay soils, this is the most common failure we see in neighborhoods like Clairemont, Tierrasanta, and parts of El Cajon where the soil heaves between wet and dry seasons.
  • Edge restraint lifting or pulling away. The edge channel is what keeps the entire field locked in place. Once the edge fails, pavers start drifting outward slowly, and you'll see gaps opening along the border. Left alone, that drift worsens with every car that drives over it.
  • Faded or chalky surface with crumbling edges. San Diego UV is relentless, especially in East County. When a paver starts spalling (flaking at the corners) or leaves a chalky residue on your shoes, the surface has oxidized past sealing. It's usually cheaper to replace the affected pavers than to keep sealing a failing surface.

Replacement Cost & What's Included

A dining nook with a built-in banquette

For a full driveway, expect $8,260 – $21,240 installed across San Diego. Smaller paver patio work sits at $4,130 – $12,980. A partial repair, where we pull and reset a section, typically lands between 10% and 25% of full replacement depending on how much base material needs to be recompacted.

What drives the spread: paver count, whether we're reusing existing base or hauling out failed material, paver thickness and brand, and access. A driveway in Point Loma with tight side yards costs more to service than a wide-open lot in Poway because everything moves by hand.

Every quote is written, fixed, and delivered before work starts. That's not a promotion. It's how we've operated since 2004 under the Threshold Group standard. You'll see parts cost and labor broken out as separate line items, so you know exactly what the pavers cost and what we charge to put them in. The work carries a written guarantee stating coverage terms in plain language, including a free return visit if anything fails.

DIY or Call Us?

If you want to know what you're dealing with before spending anything, grab a 4-foot level and a rubber mallet. Set the level across three pavers. If it rocks, you have a base problem, not a paver problem. You can also walk the perimeter and look for an edge channel that's pulled away from the pavers by more than a quarter inch. Those two checks tell us more on the phone than most photos do.

Where DIY goes wrong in San Diego is the base. Pulling a paver and adding sand on top doesn't fix a settled subgrade. You'll have the same problem back in six months. And driveway pavers are heavy: a 24-inch concrete paver runs 40 to 60 pounds each. A full day of moving them without the right gear is how backs get thrown out.

For anything beyond a single cracked paver, call us at (619) 673-9302. Isaac Pruett will tell you what's broken and what it costs to make it right before you spend a dollar.
