CertainTeed Bathroom Remodeling: The San Diego Owner’s Guide
Mason Remodeling Co San Diego installs and replaces CertainTeed bathroom systems across San Diego County, with full bathroom remodels typically running $10,620 – $33,040 depending on size and scope. We stock CertainTeed-compatible backer boards, waterproofing membranes, and trim components on our trucks, so most component failures get addressed in a single visit. Most San Diego homeowners discover a problem the hard way: a soft spot near the shower curb, cracking grout lines that won’t stay sealed, or water staining on the ceiling below an upstairs bathroom.
CertainTeed doesn’t make a single “bathroom system” like a faucet you’d swap out. They manufacture the structural layer most people never see: gypsum backer board, waterproofing membranes, and tile-setting substrates that sit behind the tile. When that layer fails in a San Diego home, you’re not looking at a parts swap. You’re looking at water that has been traveling through the wall cavity for months, and the repair usually means opening the wall to see how far it went. That’s where we come in.
Which CertainTeed Models This Applies To

CertainTeed’s bathroom products fall under their Gypsum and Ceilings divisions. The two lines we see most often in San Diego bathroom tear-outs are Diamondback Tile Backer and GlasRoc Tile Backer. Diamondback is the fiberglass-faced gypsum panel built for high-moisture areas; GlasRoc uses a glass-mat face and core that holds up better after repeated water exposure. Both come in half-inch and five-eighths-inch thicknesses. If you’re in an older San Diego home being gutted for remodel, you may also find CertainTeed Aqua-Tough panels, which were discontinued but still show up behind 1990s-era shower surrounds.
The compatibility gotcha most homeowners hit: not all tile backers are rated for the same spacing. Diamondback in half-inch thickness is rated for studs 16 inches on center. Push that framing to 24-inch centers and the panel flexes, grout cracks, and water finds a path. A lot of failed San Diego tile jobs we open up were built on 24-inch framing with the wrong panel. We check the framing before we quote a replacement, because the panel choice has to match what’s behind it. We also carry quality aftermarket equivalents when an original CertainTeed spec isn’t available, but for wet-area work we recommend staying with a glass-mat product rather than downgrading to standard cement board, which wicks moisture and fails faster in coastal humidity.

Signs Your CertainTeed Bathroom Remodeling Is Failing
- Grout cracking along the bottom row of wall tile, repeatedly. This almost always means substrate movement, not a bad grout job. The backer panel behind the tile is flexing, and no amount of re-grouting fixes a moving panel.
- Soft tile or a spongy feeling underfoot near the shower curb or toilet flange. Water has saturated the backer or subfloor. By the time you feel it from above, the panel underneath has lost structural integrity.
- Baseboard staining or paint bubbling low on walls adjacent to the shower. Water is moving sideways through the backer panel or wicking up from a failed seam. In San Diego’s marine-layer humidity, this spreads faster than it would in a dry climate.
- Musty smell that returns after cleaning, especially in a bathroom with a tub. Mold is growing inside the wall cavity or behind the tile. Surface cleaning won’t reach it because the moisture is trapped behind the CertainTeed panel, not on it.
- Efflorescence or white crust forming on grout lines. Water is passing through the tile assembly and evaporating on the surface, leaving mineral deposits behind. This tells us the waterproofing plane has been breached somewhere.

A full bathroom remodel in San Diego with CertainTeed-spec backer and waterproofing runs $10,620 – $33,040 at Mason Remodeling Co San Diego. The spread comes down to bathroom size, tile choices, and what’s hidden behind the existing walls. A small hall bath with a tub surround lands near the bottom of that range. A primary bath with a walk-in shower, custom tile, and rotted framing repair lands near the top. Partial repairs, like replacing a failed shower pan or one wet wall, fall under our small bathroom remodel range of $5,900 – $14,160.
| Scope of Work | Typical San Diego Price Range |
|---|---|
| Full bathroom remodel (CertainTeed substrate + waterproofing) | $10,620 – $33,040 |
| Small bathroom remodel or shower rebuild only | $5,900 – $14,160 |
| Walk-in shower installation with backer replacement | $5,310 – $14,160 |
| Tub-to-shower conversion | $4,130 – $11,800 |
| Shower replacement (pan + lower walls) | $3,540 – $10,030 |
Every quote from us includes the demolition, disposal, new substrate and waterproofing, tile labor, fixtures if needed, and written warranty terms. You get a written price before any work starts, and it does not change mid-project unless you change the scope. Isaac Pruett’s crew pulls permits where San Diego code requires them, and the 365-Day Done Right Promise means if something isn’t right within a year of completion, we make it right at no cost to you.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely identify the problem: run your hand along grout lines, press on tiles near the floor, check for staining around the shower base. That helps you describe what you’re seeing when you call. What you should not do is open the wall yourself if you suspect water damage. Wet gypsum panels can harbor mold that releases spores when disturbed, and the framing behind them may be compromised in ways that aren’t obvious until weight is applied. Cutting into a tile wall also sends silica dust and tile shards through the air, and you’d need proper PPE and containment to do it safely.
For anything involving a saw, a shower pan removal, or moving a drain, call us. We’ll come out, open exactly what needs to be opened, and give you a line-item quote before any repair work begins. Call (619) 673-9302 and tell us what you’re seeing. That’s the quickest way to find out whether you need a panel swap or a full rebuild.
FAQs

Properly installed CertainTeed Diamondback or GlasRoc panels will typically last 30 to 50 years, but the waterproofing layer above them often needs redoing at the 15- to 20-year mark. In San Diego, the bigger variable is installation quality: a backer panel installed with the wrong fasteners, unsealed seams, or improper spacing can fail within 5 years. Call (619) 673-9302 and we’ll tell you what we’re seeing at your place.
Small areas of surface damage can sometimes be patched if the panel is otherwise sound, but the moment water has saturated the gypsum core or caused tile delamination, the section has to come out. Patches in wet areas rarely hold long-term, and the labor to do a proper patch often approaches the cost of replacing the affected wall section entirely. We’ll always price both options before you decide.
Most San Diego bathroom remodels we do run 2 to 4 weeks from demolition to final grout, depending on size, shower type, and what we find when the walls come open. Structural repairs, permit inspections, and custom tile add time. We’ll give you a written schedule before work begins, and we won’t disappear on you mid-project.
We keep CertainTeed-compatible Diamondback and GlasRoc panels in common thicknesses on hand, along with the proper fasteners, seam tape, and waterproofing membranes. If your project calls for a specific CertainTeed product we don’t stock, we order it through our supplier network and coordinate the lead time so it doesn’t stall your project. We also stock KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone materials for remodeling work that goes beyond the wet area.
