CGI Kitchen Remodeling: The San Diego Owner’s Guide
If you have a CGI kitchen and something’s failed, you’re probably trying to figure out whether it’s worth matching the existing setup or starting fresh. In San Diego, a full kitchen remodel ranges from $16,520 to $53,100 depending on square footage, cabinet grade, and whether you’re keeping the existing layout or moving plumbing and electrical. Most homeowners we hear from discovered the problem the same way: a cabinet hinge let go, a drawer slide bent, or a laminate edge started peeling near the sink where water sits. Others call us because the hinges are fine but the doors have sagged out of square, which usually means the box itself has shifted on the wall. We stock CGI-compatible hardware on our trucks and can typically match existing hole patterns the same visit, so you’re not stuck with mismatched knobs or a door that won’t close.
Which CGI Models This Applies To

CGI cabinetry shows up across a lot of San Diego homes built from the 1990s through the mid-2010s, and most of what we see falls into two buckets: the framed overlay lines and the frameless full-overlay lines. The quick way to tell which you have is to open a door and look at the cabinet box. If you see a face frame – a 1-1/2″ solid wood strip running vertically along the front – you’ve got a framed setup. If the doors cover the entire box edge to edge with no visible frame, it’s frameless, which means you need a completely different hinge cup size and mounting plate.
CGI’s kitchen line also includes several cabinet depths that aren’t standard. Some of their wall cabinets run 13″ deep instead of the typical 12″, which matters if you’re replacing a box and reusing the old doors. We measure before we order anything, because a 12″ wall cabinet looks close enough on paper and then your crown molding lands half an inch proud. For hardware, the OEM parts are solid but slower to source these days. We carry aftermarket hinges from Blum and Salice that match CGI’s 35mm bore pattern, and honestly, they outlast most of the original equipment because the spring steel is a little heavier. If the goal is a quick fix that holds, aftermarket is usually the better move. If you want exact factory-match parts for a specific model year, we can order those too – it just takes a few days longer to land in San Diego.

Signs Your CGI Kitchen Remodeling Is Failing
- Doors won’t stay closed or bounce back open. The self-close spring inside the hinge has lost tension. It can’t be re-tensioned on most CGI hinges; the hinge gets replaced. If it’s happening on more than three doors, the whole hinge set is probably at the end of its service life.
- Drawers stick partway out and need a sharp pull. The nylon rollers or ball-bearing slides have worn flat spots. San Diego’s dry air speeds this up because the factory grease inside the slides hardens faster than it would in a humid climate. Once a drawer starts grinding, the rail usually has scoring you can feel with a fingertip.
- The bottom shelf inside a base cabinet is bowing or cracked. This is moisture damage, almost always from a slow leak under the sink that went unnoticed. CGI’s older base cabinets used particleboard shelf cores, and once water wicks in, the board swells and never returns to shape. We replace the shelf and check the cabinet floor while we’re in there because if it’s soft, the whole box needs to come out.
- Laminate edges are lifting near the dishwasher or stove. Heat and steam break down the edge banding adhesive over time. It starts as a small lift and then catches on dish towels and fingers. This is repairable with heat-applied edge banding, but if the substrate underneath has swollen from moisture, patching it looks worse than replacing the door or drawer front.
- Handles or knobs keep loosening no matter how many times you tighten them. The screw threads in the back of the door have stripped. The real fix is a slightly larger machine screw or a threaded insert, not more torque. We keep both in our truck stock because this one is constant with older CGI kitchens.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s what kitchen remodeling work in San Diego runs right now, based on the scope. A full kitchen remodel starts at $16,520 and can reach $53,100 once you’re into custom cabinet layouts, countertop replacement, and moving gas or plumbing rough-ins. A smaller kitchen or a cosmetic refresh with cabinet refinishing and new fronts lands between $10,620 and $23,600. If you’re only replacing cabinets, plan on $4,720 to $15,340 installed. Countertop installation runs $2,360 to $7,670, and backsplash work is the most budget-friendly piece at $945 to $2,950.
Every price we give is a written, line-item price before any work starts. That’s not a promotion and we never waive it. You’ll see the part cost, the labor rate, and the total in one clean sheet. The range comes down to a few things that are easy to explain: whether the existing cabinet boxes are worth saving, whether the countertop needs to be pulled to access the cabinet below, and what kind of material you’re matching. Cabinetry-grade plywood costs more than particleboard for a reason. All of our installed work is covered by our written guarantee for 365 days from the completion date. If something fails inside that window, you call and we come back at no charge. No dispute process, no fine print argument.
DIY or Call Us?
Some of this you can check yourself in ten minutes with a screwdriver and a flashlight. Pull a hinge off and look for a stamp or marking. Measure the bore hole in the door – on CGI cabinets it’s almost always 35mm, but measuring beats assuming. Check if the cabinet box is still square by measuring corner to corner with a tape. If the diagonal measurements match, the box is still true and you’re likely dealing with hardware only.
Where DIY goes sideways is when the cabinet box itself has water damage or the mounting point has stripped out. Replacing wall cabinets means dealing with weight, leveling, and mounting to studs that don’t always land where the last installer put the screw. We’ve walked into San Diego kitchens where a homeowner tried to rehang an upper cabinet and cracked the tile backsplash in the process. That’s a $945 to $2,950 backsplash job on top of the cabinet repair. Our techs arrive with name and photo sent to you before the visit, wearing a clean uniform with a photo ID badge. Tell me what’s broken. I’ll tell you what it takes. Then you decide from a written price. Call (619) 673-9302.
FAQs

A well-built CGI kitchen will give you 15 to 25 years of daily use in San Diego before the hardware and wear surfaces start showing real fatigue. Hinges and drawer slides usually go first, around the 10 to 15 year mark, and those are replaceable without gutting the kitchen. The dry coastal air actually helps the cabinet boxes themselves by reducing swelling, but it’s harder on moving parts. Call (619) 673-9302 and we’ll do a walk-through and tell you what’s worth saving.
In most cases, no – the internal spring or the ball-bearing race can’t be re-tensioned or rebuilt, so we replace the hinge or slide. What can be repaired is a stripped screw hole or a misaligned door, which we fix with threaded inserts and adjustment plates that cost far less than new cabinetry. The honest answer depends on what’s actually failed, and that’s what a free estimate call will establish. We’re at (619) 673-9302.
For common hinges, drawer slides, and cabinet hardware, we stock a range of 35mm and 26mm hardware on the truck, which means most single-appointment fixes happen the same visit. If you need a factory-match CGI part or a custom-sized door or drawer front, that typically adds one to two weeks for fabrication and shipping to our San Diego shop. We’ll tell you the lead time before you sign anything.
We stock the most common CGI-compatible replacement hardware, including hinges, drawer slides, shelf pins, pulls, knobs, and edge banding, so you generally don’t have to order anything yourself. For specialized parts, we source from multiple suppliers we’ve used for years and pass the actual cost through to you on the written price. We’re not affiliated with CGI – we’re an independent San Diego remodeling and repair company that works on their kitchens constantly.
