Cover Windows & Doors: The San Diego Owner’s Guide
If you have a Cover window or door that’s sticking, leaking air, or refusing to lock, we stock and install compatible replacement parts for most Cover models across San Diego. Typical repair work runs $470 to $2,125, while full window replacement on a Cover-fitted home ranges from $5,310 to $17,700 depending on size and glass package. Most owners discover the problem the same way: a door that suddenly needs a shoulder to close, or a window that whistles during Santa Ana winds.
We’re an independent San Diego contractor, not affiliated with Cover. That means we give you straight pricing and show up when we say we will. Isaac Pruett has worked on Cover-fitted homes from Chula Vista to Carlsbad, and his take is simple: these are solid products, but San Diego’s salt air and UV exposure wear out seals and hardware faster than most manufacturers expect. Tell me what’s broken. I’ll tell you what it takes.
Which Cover Models This Applies To

Cover windows and doors come in several series lines, and the replacement hardware isn’t always interchangeable between them. The most common Cover window lines we service in San Diego are the 3000 and 4000 series sliders, along with their single-hung and casement options. Cover doors typically fall into their hinged patio or sliding patio categories, and the hinge pins, rollers, and multi-point lock assemblies differ between generations.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most homeowners run into: Cover changed their extruded frame dimensions slightly around 2016, so a roller assembly from a pre-2016 sliding door won’t fit a newer unit, even if they look identical. The surest way to identify what you need is the small white label on the inside edge of the window sash or door panel. It’ll have a serial number starting with “CV-” followed by a series code. Snap a photo of that label before you call. It saves a second trip and gets the right part the first time.
For most San Diego homes, we recommend OEM Cover parts when the window or door is under 10 years old. After that, quality aftermarket equivalents from Caldwell and Truth Hardware often perform as well for less money. We’ll tell you which makes sense for your specific unit before any work starts.

Signs Your Cover Windows & Doors Is Failing
- Sliding door needs a running start to move. The steel rollers underneath have flat-spotted or the bearings have seized. You’ll hear a grinding sound when it finally moves. This is the most common Cover sliding door failure we see within five miles of the coast, where salt accelerates bearing wear.
- Window drops when you release it. The spiral balance or block-and-tackle balance inside the window frame has lost tension. You might notice one corner sitting slightly lower than the other even when closed.
- Lock won’t fully engage or feels loose. The multi-point lock roller or keeper has shifted out of alignment. On Cover doors, this often follows hinge sag, which is the real problem, not the lock itself.
- Fog between the glass panes. The insulated glass unit seal has failed. You can’t wipe it away from either side. In San Diego, the constant sun-to-shade temperature swings along east-facing walls speed this up dramatically.
- Drafts you can feel around the frame. Weatherstripping has compressed or dry-rotted. Feel around the door jamb on a cool evening and you’ll find the exact spot. Left alone, this quietly drives your summer cooling bill up.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s what Cover-related window and door work costs in San Diego right now. These are installed prices, not part-only numbers:
- Door roller replacement (sliding patio door): $125 to $310 per panel, including removal, cleaning the track, and installing new rollers.
- Window balance replacement (single-hung or double-hung): $95 to $240 per sash, including both balances and a recalibration check.
- Weatherstripping replacement (door or window): $70 to $185 per opening, depending on frame condition.
- Multi-point lock replacement (Cover patio door): $190 to $470, including strike plate realignment and testing.
- Insulated glass unit replacement (fogged glass): $300 to $900 per panel, based on glass size and low-E coating type.
- Full window replacement (Cover-fitted home): $5,310 to $17,700 for a typical San Diego home, with most falling between $8,000 and $12,000.
What drives the range is glass package, frame size, and whether the original opening is square. San Diego homes built in the 1970s and 1980s frequently have frames that have shifted out of square, which adds shimming and finish work time. We give you a written price before any work starts. No verbal estimate that grows. No surprise invoice. That’s how we’ve operated since 2004, and it’s not a promotion. It’s the way every project runs.
DIY or Call Us?
Some things you can handle safely: cleaning the door track, checking for a loose strike plate screw, or tightening a hinge. Those take minutes and cost nothing. But when a Cover door or window has a failed balance, a seized roller, or a multi-point lock that won’t engage, the fix involves removing heavy sashes and working with parts that hold real tension or weight.
A double-hung window sash can weigh 20 to 40 pounds. When a balance under that load lets go during removal, it takes fingers with it. Sliding door panels weigh more than most people expect, and a dropped glass panel is a serious injury risk, not just a broken door. We’d rather you call us. The diagnosis is part of the estimate, and you’ll know exactly what it costs before we touch anything. Call (619) 673-9302.
FAQs

A well-installed Cover window or door frame will last 25 to 40 years in San Diego, but hardware like rollers, balances, and weatherstripping typically needs replacement every 7 to 12 years. Coast-adjacent neighborhoods such as Point Loma, Ocean Beach, and La Jolla see faster hardware degradation because marine salt accelerates bearing and spring wear. If your Cover windows or doors are more than 10 years old and you notice stiffness or drafts, you’re likely due for hardware service rather than full replacement. Call (619) 673-9302 and we’ll tell you honestly which one you need.
Some roller assemblies can be cleaned and re-lubricated if the bearing race is still intact, and a sagging door hinge can sometimes be shimmed rather than swapped. But balances, weatherstripping, and multi-point lock components are almost always replacement items once they fail, because the wear is in the internal mechanism, not the surface. We’ll show you the failed part when we remove it, so you’re never paying for a replacement you didn’t need. Call (619) 673-9302 to schedule a look.
A single roller replacement or balance swap takes 45 to 90 minutes from arrival to cleanup. A multi-point lock replacement or insulated glass unit install can take two to three hours including removal, fitting, and testing. We bring the common Cover parts for San Diego’s most-installed series on our truck, so one visit usually completes the job. Call (619) 673-9302 and describe what’s happening, and we’ll give you a realistic time window.
We stock common Cover door rollers, window balances, weatherstripping profiles, and multi-point lock assemblies for the series most frequently installed in San Diego homes. For less common or newer Cover series parts, we source them same week through our San Diego supplier network, and we’ll give you the timeframe in writing before we start. If you’re also working on other areas of the house, we carry professional-grade cabinetry from KraftMaid, and surface materials from Cambria and Silestone. Call (619) 673-9302 for exact availability on your model.
