IKO Driveway & Pavers: The San Diego Owner’s Guide
We stock and install IKO-compatible driveway and paver components across San Diego, with most driveway replacement work running between $5,900 and $16,520 depending on square footage and material grade. You’ll usually spot the failure before we do: a sunken paver near a downspout, a cracked run where the old base has washed out, or an edge course that’s started to drift into the planting bed. The fix is rarely a single paver. It’s almost always what’s underneath it.
IKO doesn’t manufacture pavers the way it manufactures roofing shingles. The IKO name shows up in driveway and hardscape work through their asphalt and stone-composite product lines, which behave differently in San Diego’s dry heat and occasional heavy rain than they do in colder climates. We’ll tell you exactly what you’re working with before anyone picks up a shovel.
Which IKO Models This Applies To

IKO’s driveway and paver products split into two groups. Their asphalt-based paving systems are the more common residential option, and their composite paver lines fill in where you want a stone look without full masonry pricing. The compatibility gotcha most San Diego homeowners hit: IKO’s stone-composite pavers are built to European dimension standards, not the 4×8 or 6×9 modular grids used by most US concrete paver manufacturers. You can’t swap them one-for-one with a big-box paver and expect the joints to line up.
If you’re not sure what you have, check the underside of a loose paver or the edge of a paved run for a molded identification code. IKO stamps their product batch and series into the bottom face of most pavers. No stamp? We can usually match it by thickness and edge profile, but it takes a site visit. For OEM replacement, IKO’s distribution is thinner in Southern California than in the Pacific Northwest, so we’ll often recommend a specification-matched aftermarket equivalent from a manufacturer like Belgard, which we can source faster and with a clearer warranty trail. The decision depends on whether you’re patching a 10-foot strip or redoing the whole driveway.

Signs Your IKO Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
- Sunken or tilted pavers near downspouts and gutters. Water has been eroding the base layer underneath. In San Diego’s clay-heavy soil, this happens faster than most homeowners expect, especially after a wet winter.
- Hairline cracks running across multiple pavers in a straight line. That’s not a paver problem, it’s a base failure. The compacted layer underneath has shifted, and no amount of paver replacement will fix it until the base is addressed.
- Weeds or grass pushing up between joints every few weeks. Polymeric sand has broken down or was never installed properly. It’s a small symptom that turns into a big one when roots start lifting edges.
- Faded, chalky surface with exposed aggregate. UV degradation from San Diego’s year-round sun has worn through the paver’s wear layer. Structural integrity may still be fine, but the surface will keep absorbing stains and moisture.
- Water pooling in low spots after rain. The original grade has settled unevenly. A puddle that lingers for more than a couple hours is working its way down into the base and will accelerate every other problem on this list.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For San Diego homeowners, full driveway replacement runs $5,900 to $16,520, with paver driveway installation specifically landing between $8,260 and $21,240. The spread comes down to three things: square footage, the condition of the existing base, and whether you’re matching OEM IKO product or switching to a domestically available equivalent.
Where most of the money goes: excavation and base work. If the old base is intact, that’s savings. If we’re digging out four to six inches of failed material and rebuilding a proper compacted base, that’s the difference between the low end and the high end of any quote. Every estimate includes removal and haul-off of the old surface, base preparation, material, install, and a written workmanship warranty good for 365 days from completion. You get the price in writing before we start, and it doesn’t change unless you change the scope.
If it’s a patch job rather than a full replacement, we’ll tell you straight. Sometimes a section of a driveway is worth saving, and we’d rather price a liveable repair than sell you a job you don’t need.

Driveway and paver work doesn’t carry the same injury risk as high-tension springs or electrical panels, but it still goes wrong in ways that cost more than professional help would have. An owner can safely lift and reset a single loose paver if the base under it is still solid. You can also re-sweep polymeric sand into joints and check downspouts to make sure water is being directed away.
What you can’t do safely on your own: any work that involves compacted base repair. A failed base means lifting a large section, regrading, compacting in lifts, and reinstalling with the correct joint material. We’ve seen too many homeowners spread a bag of sand over a sinking driveway, lay the pavers back down, and watch the same failure return in six months. That’s time and money that should’ve gone into the real fix. The failure underneath doesn’t care how nice the top looks. Call (619) 673-9302, tell us what you’re seeing, and we’ll give you an honest read on whether it’s a weekend job or a full replacement.

FAQs

A properly installed IKO paver driveway in San Diego should last 15 to 25 years, with the surface showing UV wear well before the base fails. The dry climate extends the life of the base layer, but relentless sun shortens the cosmetic life of the paver surface itself. Call (619) 673-9302 if the surface wear is beyond what a re-seal can address.
A cracked paver is replaced, not repaired; the issue is matching the replacement pavers. Since IKO’s composite pavers follow European sizing, we verify the exact dimensions before ordering so you don’t end up with a patch that doesn’t fit. Most small replacements are done in a single visit.
A full paver driveway installation typically takes 5 to 10 working days, depending on square footage and how much of the old base we’re removing. A patch or partial replacement is usually finished in one day. We’ll give you a written schedule with the estimate.
We keep common replacement sizes for IKO-compatible pavers on hand for quick patch work, but for full driveway projects we order specifications per job so color and size match. For discontinued IKO lines, we source dimensionally matched equivalents from brands we work with regularly, including Belgard.
