IKO Roofing: The San Diego Owner’s Guide

If you have an IKO roof and something’s failing, you need to know who can match the part, what it costs installed, and how fast it gets done. We stock IKO-compatible shingles, underlayment, and flashing, and our installed repair pricing in San Diego runs from $470 to $2,125 depending on the size and location of the failure. Most IKO repairs we handle are completed in a single visit, so you’re not waiting weeks while a damaged roof keeps taking on water.

How you discover the problem usually depends on where it happens. You might notice a shingle in the driveway after a Santa Ana wind event, or a water stain on the ceiling after a heavy winter rain, or granules collecting in your gutters during the summer months. IKO makes a solid product, but San Diego’s UV exposure and coastal salt air put real stress on any asphalt shingle system. When a part of that system fails, identifying it early saves you from a much bigger repair bill.

Mason Remodeling Co San Diego is an independent service provider. We are not affiliated with IKO, but we work with their product line regularly and know the compatibility details that matter.

Which IKO Models This Applies To

IKO’s residential shingle lines break into two main families: the three-tab Marathon series and the architectural Cambridge and Dynasty lines. Each uses different sealant strips and nail placement points, so the right part depends on which line is on your roof, not just the color. If you still have the original bundle wrapper, the product name and run date are printed on it. If not, a 3/4-inch shingle sample with the color code on the back is enough for us to match it.

The most common compatibility gotcha we see in San Diego involves older Cambridge models. IKO changed the shingle width on some Cambridge runs, and installing a mismatched width leaves a visible seam and a weak point at the overlap. It happens often enough that we check measurements before we quote anything. Another one: Dynasty shingles use a reinforced nailing strip, so a repair with a standard architectural shingle will fail faster than the surrounding roof. These are the details that determine whether a repair lasts five years or fifteen.

For most homeowners, an OEM IKO replacement is the right call. It matches the existing roof in profile, color, and wear rate. We do offer quality aftermarket equivalents where they’re a true match, but for visible slopes, we generally recommend staying with IKO. The price difference is modest, and the visual result is better.

Signs Your IKO Roofing Is Failing

  • Granules in the gutters or at the base of downspouts. Asphalt shingles shed granules naturally as they age, but a heavy, consistent collection means the UV-stabilizer layer is breaking down. San Diego’s inland heat accelerates this, especially on south-facing and west-facing slopes. If the gutter trough is half-full of granules after a dry month, the shingles are losing their protective layer and their remaining lifespan just got shorter.
  • Curling, lifting, or cupped shingle edges. This happens when the asphalt core dries out and the shingle loses its ability to lay flat. In coastal areas like Point Loma or Ocean Beach, salt air accelerates the drying. Once shingles curl, they catch wind, and you’re one Santa Ana event away from losing an entire run.
  • Water stains on the ceiling or in the attic. A stain means water has already breached the underlayment. The visible stain is often several feet from the actual leak, since water travels along rafters before it drops. If you see a stain, the underlayment likely needs repair along with whatever shingle failed.
  • Cracked or missing shingles after storms. Older IKO shingles get brittle, and wind or impact splits them clean through. One missing shingle exposes the underlayment, and once underlayment is exposed to direct sun, it degrades within months. A small visual issue becomes a decking repair if you wait.
  • Flashing pulling away at penetrations. Where the roof meets a chimney, vent, or skylight, the flashing takes the most movement. If the flashing seal is broken, water gets in during rain, and the leak is slow enough that it can rot decking before you ever see a ceiling stain. This is the failure we’d tell a homeowner to inspect first after any water intrusion. In San Diego, where most homes haven’t seen a serious inspection since installation, it’s the most common root cause we find.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A remodeled primary suite with built-in wardrobes and a window seat

In San Diego, IKO roof repair pricing runs from $470 to $2,125 installed. A simple shingle replacement with a matched IKO product and proper sealing at the nail points sits at the lower end. A repair that includes underlayment replacement, flashing reseating, or multiple repaired areas moves toward the upper end. If decking underneath is rotted, the repair becomes a roof section replacement, and that’s a different conversation, but we’ll tell you before we touch anything, with a written price.

Every quote includes the parts, labor, debris removal, and a written breakdown of what we found, what we’re replacing, and what we’re leaving alone. The 365-Day Done Right Promise applies to the work: if a repair we make is not right within 365 days from the completion date, we come back and make it right at no cost to you. It’s a plain guarantee, in writing, with the terms spelled out.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check a few things yourself: look in the gutters for granules, inspect for visible shingle cracks from the ground with binoculars, and check the attic for daylight coming through the decking. Those checks tell you whether you have a problem and roughly where it is. They don’t fix it.

Here’s the honest split. Replacing a shingle looks easy, and the video tutorials make it look like a five-minute job. What the videos don’t show is what happens when you nail through a water channel you didn’t know was there, or when you lift the surrounding shingles and break their sealant strips in the process. That’s how a $200 repair becomes an $1,800 underlayment fix. Roof work also means working at height on a sloped surface. Falls from ladders and roofs are among the most common home accidents, and the risk multiplies when you’re carrying tools and looking up instead of at your feet. For roofing, we recommend a trained professional. That’s not a sales pitch. It’s just the truth about what can go wrong fast.

Tell me what’s broken. I’ll tell you what it takes. Call (619) 673-9302 and we’ll come out, identify the IKO part, and put the price in writing before we climb a ladder.

FAQs

A home office with a built-in desk and shelves

How long should an IKO roof last in San Diego?

An IKO architectural shingle roof in San Diego typically lasts 18 to 25 years, while a three-tab Marathon roof usually lasts 15 to 20 years. Coastal exposure to salt air and inland exposure to summer UV both shorten that by several years compared to milder climates. Regular inspection catches the early failures that turn a 20-year roof into a 14-year roof.

Can an IKO roof be repaired instead of replaced?

Yes, if the damage is localized to a single area and the surrounding shingles still have structural integrity. We repair IKO roofs all over San Diego, from single shingle replacements to flashing and underlayment repairs. The deciding factor is whether the surrounding shingles have remaining lifespan. If the repair area is surrounded by shingles with three years left, a repair makes sense. If they’re all near end of life, a patch is money spent twice.

How long does an IKO roof repair take?

Most IKO roof repairs in San Diego take between one and three hours on site. Single shingle or flashing repairs are typically done in under an hour. Repairs involving underlayment replacement can take up to a full afternoon, depending on weather and roof pitch.

Do you stock IKO parts, or do you have to order them?

We stock common IKO replacement shingles, underlayment, and flashing on our trucks, so most repairs use parts already on hand. If your roof uses a discontinued color or a specific series run, we source the exact match from local San Diego supply houses, which typically takes one to three days. We also work regularly with KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone product lines across our remodeling work, so parts sourcing is a familiar process for us.
