Quikrete Kitchen Remodeling: The San Diego Owner’s Guide
Quikrete kitchen remodeling in San Diego typically runs $16,520 to $53,100 fully installed, and we match Quikrete-compatible countertop mixes, backer boards, and setting materials to your existing layout during the estimate. Most homeowners call us after their original Quikrete-based concrete countertop has cracked along the sink cutout, or the tile backer behind it has started crumbling at the seams. You’ll hear a hollow sound when you tap the surface, see hairline fractures radiating from the faucet holes, or notice the grout lines pulling away from the counter’s edge where the slab meets the wall.
We’re Mason Remodeling Co San Diego, an independent San Diego contractor and not affiliated with Quikrete. We’ve built and repaired Quikrete-based kitchens across San Diego County, from Clairemont to Chula Vista to La Mesa, and we can tell you within the first visit whether the failure is in the mix, the framing, or the waterproofing underneath.
Which Quikrete Models This Applies To

Most San Diego kitchens built with Quikrete use one of three systems: Quikrete Countertop Mix (the standard 80-lb bag mix poured into forms), Quikrete Sand Mix (a finer blend often used for a smoother polish on smaller counters), or Quikrete Concrete Backer Board installed as the substrate behind tile backsplashes and under countertop slabs. Each one fails differently, and the repair path is not the same. Countertop Mix slabs crack structurally when the original pour was too thin at the sink cutout. Sand Mix delaminates in layers because the water ratio was off during mixing. Backer board wicks moisture at the seams if it was never taped and mudded with the alkaline-resistant mesh tape Quikrete specifies.
The compatibility gotcha most owners miss: Quikrete Countertop Mix needs a minimum 1.5-inch pour depth over a properly supported form. If your slab is 3/4-inch thick where it meets the front edge, the original installer skipped the reinforcement wire, and that counter was never going to survive San Diego’s humidity swings between the coast and inland valleys. We match OEM Quikrete products when the repair is localized, but for full replacement we often recommend a quality alternative like a Cambria or Silestone quartz surface if you’re done maintaining concrete. For the substrate work, we stick with Quikrete backer board because the fastener schedule and edge spacing are already familiar to our crew.

Signs Your Quikrete Kitchen Remodeling Is Failing
- Hairline cracks radiating from the sink cutout or faucet holes. This is the classic Quikrete Countertop Mix failure in San Diego kitchens. The pour was too thin at the cutout, and daily weight plus thermal expansion finally split it. Water gets in, the crack darkens, and the damage accelerates.
- Grout lines separating where the backsplash meets the counter. The backer board behind the tile is flexing or swelling. In coastal San Diego neighborhoods like Ocean Beach and Point Loma, this usually means moisture wicked through an unsealed seam at the counter’s back edge.
- A hollow, drum-like sound when you tap the counter surface. The concrete slab has debonded from its mortar bed. This happens when the base was poured over a dusty, unprimed plywood deck. The slab is floating, and every pot you set down flexes it a little more.
- White chalky residue (efflorescence) bleeding through the sealer. Water is migrating up through the slab from underneath. This is common in San Diego kitchens where the sink base cabinet traps humidity, and it tells us the waterproofing layer was skipped entirely.
- Tile corners chipping or popping off the backsplash at eye level. The backer board seam moved. If the original installer used drywall tape instead of Quikrete’s alkaline-resistant mesh, the seam is failing, and the tiles over it are taking the stress.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

A full Quikrete kitchen remodel in San Diego runs $16,520 to $53,100. That range covers everything from a modest galley kitchen in North Park to a full custom kitchen with a concrete island in Rancho Santa Fe. The smaller end of the range, $10,620 to $23,600, reflects a compact kitchen with laminate or basic tile surfaces, while the full range assumes Quikrete concrete counters, new cabinetry, and a tile backsplash.
Here’s how the major components price out in San Diego:
- Countertop installation: $2,360 – $7,670
- Backsplash installation: $945 – $2,950
- Cabinet installation: $4,720 – $15,340
- Kitchen island installation: $3,540 – $11,800
Every estimate is itemized in writing before we start. You’ll see the exact cost for demo, substrate repair, materials, and labor. No change orders, no surprise line items at the final walkthrough. And every Quikrete repair or replacement is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the work isn’t right within a year of completion, we come back and fix it at no cost to you. We also provide a free return visit if a repair fails for any reason during that period.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check a few things yourself: confirm whether the crack is wider than a credit card at any point, note whether the sink still sits flush against the counter, and check if any backsplash tiles have shifted out of plane. That information helps us price the repair before we even arrive. What you shouldn’t do is grind, cut, or attempt to patch a Quikrete concrete slab yourself. Concrete dust from grinding is a silica hazard that requires proper respirators and containment, and a partial patch on a failed pour just moves the failure to the next thinnest section. Cutting into a countertop to free an undermount sink, when you don’t know if the original installer left enough overhang to support the clips, is how you turn a $2,500 counter repair into a $7,000 full replacement.

FAQs

A properly poured, sealed Quikrete countertop should last 15 to 20 years in San Diego with yearly resealing, but one poured too thin or without reinforcement can start cracking within 18 months. The coastal humidity and summer heat cycles in the inland valleys are tough on concrete; the slab expands and contracts daily, and any weak point at a cutout or seam will fail first. If your counter is under five years old and already cracking, it was likely a pour or substrate problem, not normal wear. Call (619) 673-9302 and we’ll diagnose it during a free estimate visit.
Small, stable hairline cracks away from the sink can often be filled and resealed, but cracks radiating from a sink cutout or faucet hole usually mean the slab is structurally compromised and needs section replacement or a full pour. We’ll tell you honestly which path is cheaper in the long run. Repairs start under $500 for simple fills, while a full countertop replacement runs $2,360 to $7,670 in San Diego. Call (619) 673-9302 for an exact quote, free of charge.
We typically complete a Quikrete countertop removal and new surface installation in 2 to 4 working days in San Diego, depending on whether the substrate needs rebuilding and which surface material you choose. Concrete pours need curing time before sealing, while quartz options from our material partners can sometimes be installed faster. We’ll give you a written timeline up front so you can plan around the kitchen being down. Call (619) 673-9302 to get your project scheduled and priced.
We keep Quikrete Countertop Mix, Sand Mix, backer board, and the correct alkaline-resistant seam tape stocked on our San Diego service vehicles, so we’re ready to start most repairs the day you approve the estimate. We also maintain partnerships with KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone for homeowners who want to move away from concrete surfaces entirely. Whatever direction you choose, the materials are covered in your written quote. Call (619) 673-9302 for a free estimate and we’ll have what’s needed on the truck.
