Sakrete Kitchen Remodeling: The San Diego Owner’s Guide

Sakrete kitchen remodeling in San Diego typically runs $16,520 to $53,100 installed, depending on cabinet count, countertop surface, and whether walls or plumbing need to move. We stock Sakrete-compatible setting materials, self-leveling underlayment, and concrete backer board on our trucks, so most underlayment and substrate work starts the day we arrive. You’ll usually know something’s wrong when you see cracked tile, hollow-sounding spots underfoot, or grout that keeps crumbling no matter how many times you patch it.

Mason Remodeling Co San Diego is an independent general contractor, not affiliated with Sakrete. We work with Sakrete products because they’re predictable. That matters when you’re setting a 200-square-foot tile floor over a slab that’s been settling since the Eisenhower administration.

Which Sakrete Models This Applies To

New painted shaker cabinets with an organized deep drawer

Sakrete doesn’t make “models” the way a faucet brand does. What you’re matching is the product line and the application. The ones we see most often in San Diego kitchens:

  • Floor Mud and Deck Mud: dry-pack mortar beds for shower pans, tub decks, and floating kitchen floors over slab. Sold in 50-lb bags. Requires a specific water ratio: too wet and it shrinks, too dry and it won’t pack. This is the product homeowners most often mix wrong.
  • Self-Leveling Underlayment: used to flatten San Diego slab-on-grade kitchen floors before tile, vinyl plank, or engineered wood. Coverage runs roughly 40 to 50 square feet per bag at 1/8-inch thickness. If your slab slumps more than 1/4 inch over 10 feet, you need primer first.
  • Concrete Backer Board: the cement board behind tile walls and floors. Half-inch panels for floors, quarter-inch for walls where you don’t want to build out too far. The gotcha: Sakrete backer board is not waterproof. It resists moisture, but it doesn’t stop it. Behind a kitchen sink or around a window, you still need a membrane or liquid waterproofing.

How to identify what you have: check the bag for the product name printed on the side, or measure the panel thickness. If you’ve already got an open bag in the garage, the set time is a clue. Sakrete’s fast-set products go off in 30 to 45 minutes. Standard mixes take 20 to 24 hours before you can walk on them. If you’re not sure what was originally installed, take a photo of the torn bag or the back of a broken tile and we’ll match it before we quote.

The OEM-versus-aftermarket question is simpler with Sakrete than with appliance parts: buy the real thing. Generic bagged mortar from a big-box store is not the same mix, and we’ve pulled up floors in Golden Hill and North Park where someone used $6 bags of no-name mortar and wondered why the grout lines cracked inside a year. Sakrete’s moisture content and aggregate sizing are consistent. That consistency is what keeps tile from telegraphing cracks.

Signs Your Sakrete Kitchen Remodeling Is Failing

  • Hollow-sounding tile when you tap it. The mortar bed underneath has delaminated from the slab or substrate. If more than 20% of the floor sounds hollow, the tile will eventually crack under chair legs or appliance weight.
  • Cracks that run in a straight line through the tile and grout. That’s usually a slab movement crack coming through, not a tile problem. In San Diego, clay soil expansion and contraction is the culprit. The fix is an uncoupling membrane under new tile.
  • Grout crumbling out of the joints within months of installation. Too much water in the mix or grout was installed over a dusty surface. Either way, it won’t hold. Patching grout alone rarely fixes the underlying bond.
  • Tile lippage you can feel with your bare feet. One tile sitting a credit card’s thickness higher than its neighbor. That means the mud bed wasn’t floated flat, or someone slapped large-format tile over a wavy slab without leveling first.
  • Persistent mildew smell near the sink base cabinet. Water got behind the tile and the backer board is holding it against the studs. Sakrete backer board wicks water. Without waterproofing, that moisture sits and rots the framing slowly.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A small remodeled galley kitchen with cabinets to the ceiling

Sakrete kitchen remodeling in San Diego ranges from $16,520 to $53,100. The spread depends on three things: how much substrate has to come out, whether the slab needs leveling, and what you’re putting back on top. Here’s how it breaks down:

  • Countertop installation: $2,360 to $7,670
  • Cabinet installation: $4,720 to $15,340
  • Backsplash installation: $945 to $2,950
  • Kitchen island installation: $3,540 to $11,800
  • Full small kitchen remodel: $10,620 to $23,600

What’s included: every written quote from Mason Remodeling Co San Diego lists demolition, substrate prep, materials, labor, and disposal before you agree to anything. You get the written price before work starts. Not an estimate that grows. A written price. If the old subfloor is worse than expected once we open it up, we stop and show you exactly what we found before another dollar gets spent.

Warranty: 365 days from the completion date. If the work is not right, we make it right at no cost, including a free return visit. No dispute process, no conditions.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check a few things before you call. Tap the tile with a rubber mallet and mark the hollow spots with painter’s tape. Measure any lippage with a credit card. Note where cracks run and whether the floor slopes. These details help us quote faster.

What I’d stop you from doing is mixing your own deck mud or trying to level a slab with a bag of self-leveler from the hardware store. I’ve watched confident DIYers pour 10 bags, lose the mix window, and end up with a floor that looks like a frozen lake that thawed sideways. Fixing a botched pour costs more than doing it right the first time. Concrete and mortar are not forgiving materials. They don’t care about your weekend schedule.

If the problem is tile coming loose or grout letting go, call (619) 673-9302. We’ll tell you over the phone whether it’s a patch job or a re-set, and the estimate is free either way.
