Schluter Bathroom Remodeling: The San Diego Owner’s Guide
A Schluter bathroom remodel in San Diego typically runs $10,620 to $33,040 installed, and most jobs are completed within one to three weeks depending on shower size and prep work. Homeowners usually find us when something has already gone wrong: cracked grout at the pan line, water staining on the ceiling below, or a shower floor that flexes when you step on it. What starts as a “simple tile fix” is often a failed waterproofing system underneath, and that’s where Schluter’s KERDI membrane and DITRA underlayment make the difference between a patch job and a permanent correction.
Which Schluter Models This Applies To
We work across the full Schluter shower and waterproofing line: KERDI-BOARD, KERDI membrane, DITRA and DITRA-HEAT underlayment, KERDI-LINE drains, KERDI-SHOWER-TS trays, and all matching profiles including SCHIENE, QUADEC, and DECO (the metal edge trims that finish tile corners and transitions). If you’re not sure what you have, check the orange membrane: any shower torn out in San Diego with an orange, dimpled waterproofing layer is almost always Schluter KERDI. The critical gotcha we see is mixing systems. Schluter’s warranty applies only when all components are installed as one integrated system. If someone set a Schluter drain in a mortar bed or used a competitor’s membrane against Schluter KERDI-BOARD, the warranty is void, and the failure point is almost always that transition seam. We stock genuine Schluter parts on our trucks for repairs and replacements. Aftermarket equivalents exist for some trims and channels, but on anything waterproofing-critical, we install OEM Schluter every time.

Signs Your Schluter Bathroom Remodeling Is Failing
- Grout cracking along the pan perimeter. This means the shower tray or mud bed is moving slightly. Schluter pans are foam-based and stable when installed on a flat floor, but over a bowed subfloor, the foam flexes and grout fractures at the wall joint.
- A shower floor that bounces or sounds hollow. That’s the foam tray separating from the subfloor, usually due to thinset that skimmed over before the tray was dropped in. Water pools underneath and the tray degrades from the bottom up.
- Staining or softness on the ceiling below the bathroom. By the time you see this, the KERDI membrane has a breach. Water has been traveling along the subfloor for weeks, often from a drain seal that was never properly bonded to the membrane.
- Loose or popping tiles near the curb. The curb is the most common failure point on a Schluter shower. If the curb wasn’t wrapped correctly or the inside and outside corners weren’t banded with KERDI-BAND, water gets in at the top and the tile delaminates within two years.
- Persistent musty odor or efflorescence on tile edges. Efflorescence, that white chalky deposit, means water is moving through the setting bed but can’t escape. It’s a sign the waterproofing is holding moisture in the assembly instead of channeling it to the drain.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s what a Schluter bathroom remodel costs in San Diego, including materials and labor:
- Bathroom remodel with Schluter system: $10,620 – $33,040
- Small bathroom remodel (tub-to-shower, compact footprint): $5,900 – $14,160
- Walk-in shower installation, full Schluter waterproofing: $5,310 – $14,160
- Tub-to-shower conversion with Schluter tray: $4,130 – $11,800
The range moves on a few things: shower footprint, whether we’re fixing a failed subfloor, whether you want DITRA-HEAT under the tile, and what trim profiles you choose. Every Mason Remodeling Co San Diego job gets a written price before any work starts. That number includes demolition, waterproofing materials, tile setting, trim, drain, grout, and cleanup. If the install fails within 365 days of completion, the Done Right Promise means we return and make it right at no charge.

There are a few things you can safely check yourself: confirm the shower floor has a consistent slope to the drain (no puddling at the walls), verify the trim edges are still bonded, and check the ceiling below the bathroom for any new staining. What you shouldn’t do is pull up a tile to “take a look.” Once you breach Schluter’s integrated membrane, you can’t restore it without rebuilding that section of the waterproofing assembly. One popped tile can turn a $700 repair into a $7,000 redo. If the pan is flexing, the drain is loose, or you see water where water shouldn’t be, call us at (619) 673-9302. We’ll assess it properly.
FAQs

A properly installed Schluter shower lasts 25 to 40 years in San Diego conditions, largely because our dry climate prevents the persistent moisture problems that degrade grout and thinset in humid regions. Failures we repair are almost always installation errors, not material defects.
Yes, if the failure is isolated, like a loose curb tile or cracked corner band, we can perform a targeted Schluter repair that restores the waterproofing seal without tearing out the entire shower. Once water has saturated the subfloor or the tray has separated, a full rebuild is the honest fix.
Most Schluter shower replacements take 5 to 10 working days from demo to grout cure, with a full bathroom remodel running two to three weeks. DITRA-HEAT and custom tile patterns add a few days.
Yes. Our San Diego trucks carry KERDI membrane, KERDI-BAND, corners, drain assemblies, and common trim profiles so we can start repairs on the first visit instead of waiting on a supply house order.
