Schluter Driveway & Pavers: The San Diego Owner’s Guide
Schluter driveway and paver systems in San Diego typically run $8,260 to $21,240 installed for a full paver driveway, with concrete driveways landing between $5,310 and $14,160. We stock Schluter-compatible edging, drainage profiles, and transition strips on our trucks, and we can source pavers matched to your existing layout within a few business days. Most owners discover a problem the same way: a paver shifts underfoot after rain, an edge strip pulls away from the concrete, or water starts pooling where it never pooled before. The fix usually starts smaller than a full replacement, but getting the right profile and drainage detail matters more than most people expect.
We’re an independent San Diego contractor, not a Schluter dealer or affiliate. What that means for you: we quote the part and the labor as separate line items, and we’ll tell you when a Schluter-branded profile is worth the money and when a quality equivalent does the same job for less.
Which Schluter Models This Applies To

Schluter makes a few distinct systems that show up in San Diego driveways and paver work: Schluter-Systems’ TROBA drainage mats under paver surfaces, BARA edge profiles for paver-to-concrete transitions, and DILEX movement joints where a paver field meets a slab or stucco wall. The compatibility gotcha: TROBA comes in multiple thicknesses (TROBA 8, TROBA 11, TROBA 22, and TROBA-Plus), and the wrong thickness changes how water moves under your pavers. If you pull up a loose paver and see a black dimpled sheet underneath, take a photo and measure the dimple height before calling anyone. That one measurement saves a wasted trip.
If you don’t see the sheet, the failure is usually in the edge profile or the bedding layer, not the mat itself. For OEM versus aftermarket on Schweitzer-style trim and joints: Schluter aluminum and stainless profiles are hard to beat for coastal San Diego because the salt air eats cheaper zinc trim in two or three years. For drainage mats, there are solid aftermarket equivalents that perform identically and cost about 20 to 30 percent less. We’ll quote both and let you decide.
We also keep parts on hand for KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone, so if your driveway project runs into a kitchen or bath remodel, one call covers it.

Signs Your Schluter Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
- Pavers shifting or rocking underfoot. This almost always means the bedding sand has washed out, usually because a drainage mat failed or was never installed. Standing water after rain is the tell. In San Diego’s clay-heavy soils, especially east of the 805, poor drainage under pavers causes more failures than anything else.
- Edge strip pulling away from the concrete. The BARA profile or similar aluminum edge is losing its anchor. It could be a failed adhesive bond, or the concrete edge itself is spalling. If the strip is bent or lifting more than a quarter inch, water is getting underneath and the sub-base is washing out one rain at a time.
- Visible cracking or waviness across the paver field. With Schluter TROBA mats, waviness usually means the mat was lapped incorrectly or debris got between the mat and the pavers during install. Cracks in the pavers themselves point to a base that wasn’t compacted to spec, not a paver defect.
- Weeds pushing through seams. You shouldn’t see aggressive weed growth if the drainage mat and joint sand are doing their job. Persistent weeds mean the joint sand has thinned out and organic material is collecting, which holds water where it shouldn’t.
- Water pooling against the garage slab or house foundation. This is the one that turns a cosmetic issue into a structural one. If water sits against your foundation after a good San Diego downpour, the drainage detail failed, and it’s worth fixing before winter rains arrive.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

A partial repair, like replacing a failed edge profile or re-setting a section of pavers, usually runs $700 to $2,500 in San Diego depending on how much sub-base work is needed. A full paver driveway replacement lands between $8,260 and $21,240, and concrete runs $5,310 to $14,160. What pushes a job to the top of that range: poor access for equipment, deep excavation to fix a failed base, drainage corrections, or matching existing pavers that are no longer manufactured.
Every quote we write breaks out the parts cost, the labor, and the disposal fees as separate line items. You get a written price before we move a single paver, and the 365-Day Done Right Promise applies to driveway and paver work the same as it does to a kitchen remodel: if it’s not right within a year of completion, we make it right at our cost, not yours.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check a few things yourself: confirm whether a drainage mat exists under the pavers, note where water pools after rain, and snap photos of any lifted edges or shifting pavers. That information helps us quote accurately over the phone. What I’d steer you away from: pulling up pavers to “take a look.” The moment you disturb the bedding layer, you’ve changed the drainage path, and putting it back to spec requires screed rails and compaction, not just setting the paver back down. Tell me what’s broken. I’ll tell you what it takes.
If the issue is an edge strip or a few settled pavers, it’s often a half-day repair. If water has been undermining the base for a season or two, it’s a bigger excavation. Either way, you’ll know the exact number before any work starts. Call (619) 673-9302 and we’ll schedule a visit.
FAQs

A correctly installed Schluter drainage layer under pavers should last 20 to 25 years in San Diego’s climate, but the pavers and edge profiles themselves typically need attention every 10 to 15 years. Coastal salt air shortens the life of metal trim, and poor drainage under clay soil shortens everything. Call (619) 673-9302 for an honest assessment of what’s worth replacing versus repairing.
Most failures can be repaired in sections if the drainage mat and base are still sound, which means a repair in the $700 to $2,500 range instead of a full replacement. The exception is when water has washed out the sub-base under a large area; at that point section repairs become a temporary fix, and we’ll show you why with photos. Get a written quote before deciding either way.
A typical edge or section repair takes half a day to a full day on site, while a full paver driveway replacement in San Diego runs three to five working days depending on access and excavation depth. We’ll give you a firm timeline with your written quote, not a loose estimate that shifts once the job starts.
We stock Schluter BARA edge profiles, TROBA drainage mats, and joint sand on our trucks, along with matching tools and adhesives for repair work; specialty profiles and larger quantities arrive within a few business days. Our trucks also carry common KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone replacement hardware for remodels that cross over. Call (619) 673-9302 and we’ll confirm what’s on the truck for your area.
