Therma-Tru Windows & Doors: The San Diego Owner’s Guide
If you have a Therma-Tru door or window with a failing part, we can source and install the correct replacement, typically within a week of your call to (619) 673-9302. Installed Therma-Tru part replacement in San Diego runs roughly $175 to $950 depending on the component, with full door slab swaps starting around $1,200. Most owners discover the problem the hard way: a door that suddenly drags against the threshold, a handle that spins without retracting the latch, or weatherstripping that has flattened into a useless ribbon after a few San Diego summers.
We’re an independent San Diego contracting firm. We’re not a Therma-Tru dealer or factory affiliate. That works in your favor: we match parts by measurement and spec, not by inventory convenience, and we tell you plainly when an aftermarket equivalent performs as well as OEM for less money.
Which Therma-Tru Models This Applies To

Therma-Tru splits its residential line into a few families most San Diego homes have at the entry or patio: Classic-Craft, Fiber-Classic, Smooth-Star, and Pulse (for impact-rated coastal zones). Each series uses different slab thicknesses and hinge prep patterns, so a hinge set from a Smooth-Star door won’t seat correctly on a Classic-Craft slab without re-mortising, which we’ve seen done badly more times than we can count.
The quickest way to identify your door: open it and look at the hinge edge. Therma-Tru stamps a manufacturing code there, usually a series of letters and digits. If that stamp has worn off or been painted over, measure the slab thickness. Most Therma-Tru entry doors are 1-3/4 inches thick. The Pulse series runs thicker and heavier. Match the measurement, the hinge placement, and the bore spacing, and you’ll get the right part the first time. OEM parts carry a premium, sometimes 30 to 50 percent over a quality aftermarket equivalent. For weatherstripping, sweeps, and hinges, a good aftermarket match works fine. For the door slab itself, stick with OEM or a Therma-Tru-authorized replacement because the fiberglass skin composition is specific to the series.

Signs Your Therma-Tru Windows & Doors Is Failing
- Door drags or sticks at the threshold. The sweep has worn down or the hinges have loosened enough to let the slab sag. Left alone, the door edges start shaving material off the frame.
- Handle turns but latch won’t retract. The internal spring in the latch assembly has broken or the spindle has stripped. This is a mechanical failure, not a lock problem, and the fix is a new latch set, not graphite spray.
- Visible daylight or a draft at the door edges. Weatherstripping loses compression after a few years, especially in San Diego’s dry heat plus salt air near the coast. Once it’s flat, it’s done; there’s no reviving compressed foam or vinyl.
- Condensation or fog inside the glass unit. The insulated glass seal has failed and moisture is now trapped between panes. This one’s more common in older Therma-Tru units and on west-facing San Diego exposures that take the afternoon sun year-round.
- Cracked or peeling door skin at the bottom corners. Water wicks up behind the sweep over time and delaminates the fiberglass edge. We see this regularly in neighborhoods like Point Loma and Pacific Beach where salt air accelerates the breakdown.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s what Therma-Tru part replacement typically costs in San Diego, installed:
| Part or Service | Installed Price Range in San Diego |
|---|---|
| Weatherstripping replacement (full perimeter) | $175 – $350 |
| Door sweep replacement | $95 – $225 |
| Latch and handle set replacement | $225 – $495 |
| Hinge replacement (set of three, with mortise work) | $250 – $550 |
| Insulated glass unit replacement | $350 – $950 |
| Full door slab replacement, installed | $1,200 – $2,800 |
The price spread depends on the part, the series, and whether the frame needs correction before the new part goes in. A sagging door is often a hinge problem, but sometimes the frame has shifted and the fix takes longer. Every job gets a written price before work starts, and our workmanship is covered for 365 days from the completion date. If a part fails because we installed it wrong, we come back and make it right at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?
Some Therma-Tru parts are genuinely simple for a careful homeowner: a screw-on door sweep, a compression weatherstrip that slides into its kerf, a visible clutch screw adjustment on a handle. If you can see the broken part and the replacement snaps or screws into place, go ahead. What goes wrong is usually the unseen part: a hinge that’s wallowed out its screw holes, a latch that needs the bore realigned, glass that has to be cut and sealed to spec. Those jobs need a straight edge, a sharp chisel, and patience. If the part you need matches a measurement you’re unsure about, call (619) 673-9302 and describe what you’re looking at. Tell me what’s broken. I’ll tell you what it takes.
FAQs

A properly installed Therma-Tru front door lasts 20 to 30 years in San Diego, with weatherstripping needing replacement every 3 to 5 years and sweeps every 2 to 4 years depending on sun exposure. Coastal homes in La Jolla, Ocean Beach, or Coronado see faster wear on hardware due to salt air. Call (619) 673-9302 if you want us to assess what’s left of yours.
Weatherstripping and sweeps are replace-only parts, not repairable ones. Latches can sometimes be repaired if the issue is a loose spindle, but a broken internal spring means replacement. We’ll always tell you which one you’re dealing with before we order anything. A phone call to (619) 673-9302 with the part description costs you nothing.
Most single-part replacements take 1 to 2 hours on site. Full door slab swaps run 4 to 6 hours including frame adjustment. We match the part before we arrive so there’s no second trip waiting on a shipment. Call (619) 673-9302 and we’ll give you a realistic window for your specific door.
We keep common sweeps, weatherstripping profiles, hinges, and latch sets in the truck for the Therma-Tru series most common in San Diego. Slabs and insulated glass units are ordered per job, usually arriving in 3 to 7 business days. If you need the part confirmed before we come out, we’ll match it from your photos or your door’s hinge-edge stamp.
If you’re tired of fighting a door that drags or a handle that won’t catch, call (619) 673-9302 and we’ll get you scheduled. We also stock cabinet and surface hardware for KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone projects across San Diego. Written price before work starts, every time, no exceptions.
